Information

A document, dated 2nd September 1765, pertaining to the examination of Samuel Otley a wool comber, late a soldier , gave the following information on oath. He was born at Ousden and lived with his father Edward, legally settled in Ousden and then his mother and step father. At about 18 years of age he went to live in the Angel Inn in Bury St Edmunds, but not as a hired servant. He then lived in various others place but never as a hired servant. In 1758 he enlisted into His Majesty's service and served four years under captain Thomas Nightingale in the Independent company. When he was about 20 he married Margaret Sturgeon. This was witnessed by Thomas Complim and William Robards.
